Prerequisite-

One prerequisite to follow before performing the given procedure is to check whether Service Pack 2 is installed in your machine. This is because the location of certain files may vary if Service Pack 2 is installed. To check the service pack-

  • Open Word.
  • From the Word menu, select About Word.

If the version number is 14.2.0 or above, then Service Pack 2 is installed in your machine.

Now, follow the methodology mentioned below to fix the issue:

STEP 1-

Start the procedure by closing Outlook and other applications.

For quitting active applications, follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. From the Apple option, choose Force Quit option.
  2. In the Force Quit Applications window select an application.
  3. Select Force Quit.
  4. Repeat the process to quit all the active applications.

Note-

It is to be noted that all the unsaved documents in the active documents are not saved once an application is force quit.

Restart Outlook for Mac 2011 again and in case the issue Outlook for Mac 2011 Crashes or Hangs at Start up persists follow the next step.

STEP 2-

Without Running Schedules Open Outlook.

In order to tackle the issue, check whether it is related to the account settings or pending send/receive actions. You can do so by opening Outlook without running schedules and also by connecting to a mail client.

  1. Press the shift key and then select the Outlook icon from the dock. This will prevent Outlook from sending or receiving mails.
  2. Close Outlook.
  3. Start Outlook.

If the issue persists, move to the next step.

STEP 3-

Verify Outlook Identity

Office 2011 Identities folder stores all the Outlook database and database records. When the folder is moved to the desktop, a new database is created. Troubleshoot database with following steps:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. On the Go menu, select Home.
  3. Select Documents and then click on Microsoft User Data.
  4. Move Office 2011 identities to the desktop.
  5. Open Outlook.

If Outlook starts without any problem, then surely the problem is with the database. For this you will need to repair the database. If the problem continues to persist, go to the next step.

STEP 4-

Detach Outlook Preferences

At times Outlook for Mac 2011 Crashes or Hangs at Start up due to corruption issues in Outlook preferences. For fixing this issue, move preferences for the desktop.

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Select Home from the Go Menu
  3. Open Library from MAC OS X Lion.
  4. Open Preferences and move the following files to the desktop. In case few files are missing, move the remaining files as some files do not get created until an Outlook feature is used.

5. Open Outlook.

If Outlook is not crashing or hanging, then there are some issues with the files. For this you will need to isolate the file that is causing the problem. Move all the files one by one back to their original position and see if Outlook is hanging. Move the file that is causing trouble to trash.

Note:

If you have Service Pack 2 installed in your system, then follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. In the Go menu, select Home.
  3. Open Library from MAC OS X Lion.
  4. Open Application Support.
  5. Open Microsoft and then Office 2011. Move the following files to desktop.
  • OfficeSync Prefs
  • Outlook Preferences

6. Open Outlook.

If the problem with Outlook still continues, then move on to Step 5.

STEP 5-

Restart Your Computer in safe mode

  1. Shut down and then start your system.
  2. As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
  3. After the grey Apple and progress indicator is visible, release the shift key.
  4. During startup, you will see Safe Boot displayed.

STEP 6-

Creation Of New User Account

  • At times the user information gets corrupted. For this sign in as a new user or can create a new account. After this test an application.

Strange issue here. I have a client who uses Outlook 2011 on a MacBook. He uses an IMAP account and every 7-10 days it tries re-downloading all the emails again.

The mailbox itself will be working absolutely fine, then one day when outlook is opened it randomly says at the bottom that it's downloading all the emails again (think he has around 1500 emails in his inbox).

It usually gets to around 400-450 downloaded, then Outlook hangs and crashes.

The only fix I've found for this was to make it download headers only for all emails (usually this is on but excludes the inbox). When it's set to only download headers for all folders, it doesn't crash, but emails then take an age to view, and they're not patient enough for that

I can't see any reason why Outlook feels the need to try and re-download every single email again, so if this was fixed then I suppose Outlook wouldn't keep crashing.

So far I've tried:

Re-installing office

Deleting the profile and then adding it back in

Moving emails to an Archive (.olm) so that the mailbox is smaller
